Cartagena, Colombia - September

We started our first day of September by trying out a new breakfast place we've had our eye on for a while, Crepes & Waffles. It's about two blocks south of our apartment, therefore our new favorite brunch spot. We both got waffles (naturally) and were not disappointed.

The next week we ate in each day during the week until Friday, when we decided to venture out into the walled city for some #sushi which I've been craving. We went to a place called Masaki Sushi Wak. The inside was super cute, and our rolls were delicious!

Afterwards we went and got drinks next door at Alquimico. You might recognize the name from August's blog. We went there for drinks, but the rooftop wasn't open the first time since it was a Tuesday (it's open Wednesday-Saturday). It was worth the wait, though!

The roof had such a different feel than the rest of the bar. In fact, each floor seemed to have it's own ambiance. The first floor was more of an intimate feel with dimmed lighting. On the second floor you could find a pool table making it seem like more of a sporty setting, but the rooftop felt more tropical. All the bartenders and waiters/waitresses had on Hawaiian shirts, twinkle lights lined the patio, and there was a cute neon sign over the bar.

We both enjoyed our drinks there and agreed we would be going back again, bringing those who visit! We also noticed a rooftop across the street we would like to check out some time, too!

The next night we had plans to go out for drinks with one of Nate's coworkers, Hermes, for his girlfriends birthday. We started the night at a disco club called Farandula. The night started slow, we were just sitting and talking with some of their college friends and a bottle of Rum. As the night went on, people started getting up to dance. It was super interesting for Nate and I because the way people dance in Colombia is not what we're used to back in the U.S., it was more of a salsa dance. We felt a bit uncomfortable, but got up and danced anyways (we weren't given much of a choice). One more club, and a few drinks later Nate and I called it a night.

The next morning we went to none other than Crepes & Waffles for some recovery food. Nate got huevos rancheros and I got Lox. Both were delicious. We ended our Sunday with Homemade Mac and Cheese and some #sundaynightfootball.

On the following Wednesday we were surprised with some college friends being in town. We met them at La Cevicheria, a place Nate has been dying to go. As we walked up to the table we saw our friend being serenaded by two guys rapping about Chicago (after asking where we were from). That happened about four more times throughout our meal.

We ended up ordering a few different plates and sharing them as a table. We got the octopus ceviche, lobster ceviche and the shrimp ceviche. All were very good.

After we finished eating we took them to our new favorite rooftop at Alquimico. They thought it was awesome up there. We got a round of drinks, enjoyed the atmosphere then moved on to a new bar.

We weren't sure exactly where we were headed, just walked towards the plaza without a spot in mind. One of the restaurant workers for El Mirador suggested going there and without a better idea we agreed. The rooftop turned out to have one of the bet view's yet! We enjoyed a couple drinks there, showed the boys how they do tequila shots in Latin America then Nate and I called it a night seeing as we both had to work in the morning.

The following Thursday Nate and I finally signed up for the gym near us. I'm definitely there for the view, not the workout!

On Friday we met up with our friends from college one last time before they headed out on their flight Saturday. It was a more relaxed night. We met them at The Clock Pup, Cartagena. Sitting by the window's gave you a really nice view of the plaza. The bar had a unique feel to it for being in Cartagena. It felt like a bar you would find in London. They had a lot of beer options, which Nate liked. After those drinks we said our goodbye's.

Saturday was a productive day for us to get some things checked off our to-do lists, but Sunday we ventured out again. We walked over to the Castillo de San Felipe. It was about a 45 minute walk from where we're staying. It cost's 25 thousand pesos to get in (or about 7 USD). It's very hot up there so make sure you bring a water/hat/whatever you need to stay cool! Since we walked there were were drenched in sweat and decided to take a taxi home. Despite the heat, the castle was cool to see and had some great views of the city.

After the castle we went to our usual Sunday brunch at Crepes & Waffles then went home to watch some Sunday football.

The following weekend Tomas and Rafa were back in town. Friday night we met up with them and one of their friends at a restaurant called Gran Inka. It was a really nice restaurant with a great location. Our table looked out onto the main plaza.

The next morning Nate and I volunteered with people from his office. We went out to a beach down the coast and picked up trash.

Later that night we went to Alquimico (...again) to meet Tomas and Rafa for a drink. We had a table reserved on the first floor but moved up to the roof later so we could show them the view. They really enjoyed the restaurant and plan to go back.

Sunday, on their last night in town, we got one last dinner with them. It was right on the water with a beautiful view. The restaurant was called Marea. We sat out on the pattio. For once the weather was perfect for sitting outside. It was so beautiful to see the lights reflecting on the water from the clock tower and the rest of the walled city. I think this would be a great place to bring visitors. The food was delicious.

The following weekend we planned a trip to Santa Marta. You can read about it here!

We had an awesome month, but were especially excited for this upcoming month due to a trip home where we get to see our friends and families as well as go to one of my life-long best friends weddings! We're also excited for some visitors over the next month. Cant wait to share it with you all on next month's blog!

You can find a video encompassing all the activities and sunsets (mainly sunsets...) from this past month below.

Thanks for reading!
