Coming Home to Cartagena

This August Nate and I made the move to Cartagena, Colombia! Nate left the first weekend of August but I wasn't able to join him until later on. It worked out though, because he had to go to Bogota first to get his paperwork and visa figured out.

Traveling isn't all fun all the time, sometimes you run into issues. For instance, as I hopped on the first leg of my Sunday morning flight we were already delayed due to a storm. Because of this I missed my second flight from Florida to Cartagena and had to stay the night in Fort Lauderdale. I finally arrived to cartagena that Monday afternoon!

Once I got there, we went to the apartment and dropped off my bags. Then Nate and I headed into the old part of the city for some much needed drinks. I was immediately taken back by all the colors on the streets. We first went to Cartagena Craft Beer Company. Nate got a craft beer, of course, while I got a margarita! We also shared some chips and guac as well as some sushi. It was delicious!

After we ate there, we headed out to get drinks at Alquimico. This was a super unique looking bar. They also have a rooftop which we weren't able to see because it's only open Wednesday-Sunday. We can't wait to go back and check it out though!

Later in the week before grocery shopping we found a cool looking restaurant right by our apartment and ended up eating there. It's right across the street from the beach and super colorful. The food was really good too!

The following weekend our friends Tomas and Rafa were visiting from Bogota. We hung out with them on Saturday. First we had drinks with them at their AirBnB. Later we went for dinner at Cafe Del Mar.

The view was really nice, but it started raining so we moved to a nearby restaurant, Varadero. It turned out to be amazing. The inside was really cool looking, and the food was delicious!

That Sunday we started our day out by going to an aviary with one of Nate's coworkers and her family. I don't usually like birds, but I will admit some of the birds there were really cool!

After the Aviary we went over to Playa Blanca. We got some chairs on the beach and they brought our food to us there. We had fried fish, coconut rice, salad and fried plantains. It was SO good!

While at the beach we had to jump into the water, of course! It was so blue! The water was warm and felt great after being in the hot, humid sun! We really enjoyed the beach there, it got us excited to explore more of the beaches in the area, too!

The following weekend we decided to go our for some drinks in the old part of town Friday. We found a bar called Bourbon St. which was New Orleans themed. The inside of the bar was pretty cool, they seem to have live music there too!

The next morning we took a boat out to Isla Grande and spent the day at Cocoliso Resort. We saw a few options on different tour sites, but because of a recommendation from one of Nate's coworkers, we decided to go here.

We bought our trip right from the Cocoliso website which made me nervous at first since we wouldn't have a guide, but it was pretty simple. We met at the bay to catch our boat our to the island around eight. Once we got to the island it was pretty relaxed, not too many people at the resort. It seems like most people there only go for the day rather than spending the night. We hung out by the beach and the pool most the day, got lunch and then headed back to Cartagena around 3:00.

Our first few weeks in Cartagena were, amazing and we can't wait to explore more! Feel free to watch the video of our travels below, and keep an eye out for more updates!
