DIY Door Mat

This is a project I've been particularly excited about trying. I've seen these doormats all over my #pinterest and #instagram feeds and have been dying to try it out!

While I was home in October my sister and I decided to take the plunge. You can find some pictures of our projects below as well as a tutorial.

I'm so excited to create more of these for all different occasions!

Here's what you need:

Here's What You Do:

  • Create the design you want on #Cricutdesignspace and size it for your mat size.

  • Cut your design out on the vinyl.

  • Weed your design as necessary and attach it to the contact paper for transfer.

  • Place the contact paper centered on the mat.

  • To remove the contact paper, you're going to have to hold the vinyl down with your hands because it won't stick to the mat super well.

  • Once you have a small section removed, place a piece of tape along the edge of the vinyl to keep it from moving while you finish separating the rest of the vinyl.

  • Once you have finished removing the contact paper, the vinyl will just be sitting on the mat, not so much sticking. Take your time and straighten out your design to put all the pieces into place.

  • Apply heat to help the vinyl stick to the mat. An iron could work on its lowest setting. Be sure to cover the vinyl with parchment paper to protect the vinyl from melting. This should help the vinyl stick to the mat to create a better stencil with smoother lines.

  • Next, use your paint brush and dab the paint on over the stencil to help minimize bleeding. It helps to do two coats to be sure all areas were covered.

  • Once the paint is dry, remove the stencil.

  • To seal the paint, spray on a polyurethane finish for extra protection.

  • Enjoy your new doormat!

If you enjoy these custom mats as much as we do and tried it for yourself, share your creations with us and let us know what you thought!
