Despite almost 9 inches of snow falling in the Chicago-land area this past Saturday, our flight made it out with just a slight delay! We landed in #MexicoCity mid-afternoon and took that time to unpack our stuff and grab dinner in our new home, #Condesa.
Weirdly enough our first meal was pizza from Pizza Nosferatu, but it was good pizza nonetheless! It was a cute little restaurant only a few minutes from our place. We sat outside despite the chilly breeze to appreciate the negative degree weather we escaped back home.
We started our Sunday by walking to the grocery store to get a few items. It was nice and close, and had most of the regular items and brands we would buy at home.
After we came back and put the groceries away we headed out to explore the neighborhood. We walked in the direction of the park, Bosque de Chapultepec.
The park was massive, with so much going on. At the entrance there was a cluster of vendors selling all sorts of things from food, to hats, sunglasses and hand crafted items. It was very crowded, but it was interesting to see all that was going on.
Once we got into the park we walked towards the #botanicalgarden which was beautiful. It was surrounded by an array of other gardens outside. It was so peaceful, you almost forgot about the craziness happening on the other side of the park by the vendors. In fact, there were some meditation and yoga classes happening within the gardens.
After walking through the peaceful garden we started to explore more of the park. We found ourselves wandering near the lakes, #LagosdeChapultepec. Here you can rent boats to go out on the lake. There was a house called #LagoManor your could go into and tour which had a great view of the lakes and the sky scrapers that lie beyond them.
After the lakes we walked over to the #zoo. The zoo was free which was amazing! However, it was also very crowded, to be expected I suppose. They had plenty of animals which was cool to see. They were one of the few zoo's in the world with a panda in it!
The zoo was a lot of walking but well worth it. By the end of the day we logged almost 20,000 steps! Long day. Needless to say we were tired and ready for a drink and some food. We started to walk back towards our place. We found a restaurant called Los Uruguayos which had great food. There was also a super friendly man playing the accordion which made for a unique experience.
At the end of the day we were happy to get back home and watch some #Netflix as Nate prepared for his first day of work.
On Sunday we went to get lunch with a family friend, Jose, from Chicago. He grew up here and was able to give us the inside scoop with his sister and nephew who currently live here. We started the day by getting traditional #barbacoa at La Oveja Negra. It was way out of my comfort zone, but it was so good! We ordered a ton of food and ate family style. I learned that I like cactus!
Across the street was a traditional market with literally anything you could imagine from food, to clothes and pet supplies. If you get the chance I highly suggest checking one of these places out!
After lunch we went back to Jose's sisters house so they could freshen up. Then he and his nephew took us downtown to explore via the metro. We passed a bar, The Opera, where at the end of the revolutionary war the Mexicans put a gunshot through the ceiling of the bar in celebration and it's still there!
After, we went to the Miralto Restaurante. It's in the 40th floor of Torre Latino. It provides a 360 degree view of Mexico City and it's absolutely stunning. I can't wait to come back and see what it looks like at night!
After #Miralto, we went to El Balcon Del Zocalo for a drink which was also great with a beautiful view overlooking the Plaza de la Constitucion.
It is at the top of a super cute hotel. The perfect place to stop for a drink as you explore the downtown area.
We then walked through the plaza below and after, took the metro back to Jose's sisters house for dinner. They threw a dinner party for their entire family. It was so sweet of them to welcome us into their home. It was amazing how much food they make! We spent about 5 hours with a never ending supply of taco's and grilled fruit. It was so nice to see a familiar face and feel like we had family to reach out to here in Mexico.
We are excited about our new home and have had a great time exploring this January. We can't wait to explore more of the area and share with you!
